Workforce Development
Creating a pool of interested individuals to work in the hospitality industry in Massachusetts is key to not only our immediate success but our longevity,
MLA has and will continue to develop partnerships with local technical/vocational schools, high schools, junior colleges, and universities to help deliver career-related training to students who are seeking to improve their earning potential and career options by increasing skill levels, educational levels, or obtaining industry-relevant training.
Should you reach out to the schools directly, please copy [email protected]. It is important to the MLA that we measure our success and offer programs and initiatives that bring value to our partnerships with the schools, our members, and the communities within the Commonwealth.
Schools interested include but are not limited to:
High Schools
Cristo Rey Boston High School
https://www.cristoreyboston.org
Cristo Rey Boston is a tuition-free, Catholic, college-preparatory high school in Dorchester, serving exclusively students from under-resourced communities with the mission of college and career success. Each student works one day per week as part of the Corporate Work Study Program. This real-world job experience not only helps pay for about half the cost of education for each student but also instills the hard and soft skills for their eventual success. Often, it even helps shape a student's career trajectory.
CRB seniors earn 100% college acceptance, and alums finish their degree programs at three times the national average for similar economic demographics. Corporate Partners, including the Boston Harbor Hotel, Club Quarters Hotels, Hotel Commonwealth, The Newbury Boston, and the Massachusetts Convention Center, can attest that this is a rewarding, local mentoring relationship that showcases the value of investing in a diverse workforce development pipeline.

Greater Lowell Technical High School

Greater Lowell Technical High School commits to ensuring students’ readiness for career, college, and citizenship in the 21st century. We challenge and support students as they realize their individual potential for personal and professional success. We are the largest technical high school in Massachusetts, with 2,200 students. A student-run restaurant, The Artisan, is open to the public for lunch on Tuesdays through Fridays. Hospitality Management students operate The Artisan in their Sophomore year, and learn and work every position from Dishwasher to Manager on Duty. Juniors experience hands-on learning at local hotel partnership properties to learn every job role and department within various classifications and brands of hotels. Students must master the check-in, check-out, LEARN Model, hotel industry bed making, and cleanliness processes through hands-on assessments. In January, eligible Juniors qualify for co-op opportunities to be employed within the hospitality industry. Instead of attending shop at school, students are employed in the hospitality industry and earn their weekly shop grade while earning a paycheck. Seniors have the option of co-op employment or to continue with local hotel partnerships learning hotel operations and expanding their leadership skills. Additionally, students are exposed to various career paths in the hospitality industry through community partnerships, guest speakers, and field trips.
