The Massachusetts Lodging Education Foundation is pleased to work with secondary and post-secondary schools offering hospitality programs, to introduce them to our members and provide resources that will further enhance their education.

Guest Speakers
Senior staff at hotels, attractions, and venues will speak to the students at their schools based upon topic and availability. Speaking engagements will be a minimum of one hour and topics and protocols will be discussed directly with the instructor and the hotel, venue, or attraction in advance.
Speakers will share their career trajectory, inspiring touchpoints and the importance of relationships and mentors.
Departments available to speak as a guest include but are not limited to Massachusetts Lodging Association members including, Finance, Sales & Marketing, Rooms Division, Front Office, Housekeeping, Engineering, Culinary, Food & Beverage, Event Services, Human Resources, and other approved department leaders/managers.
Field Trips
1. Property Tours
This program is available to an individual or class that has a curriculum in hospitality at a secondary or post-secondary education institution. It is also available to individuals who have either prior work experience in the hospitality industry or have completed courses in hospitality. The ideal students have expressed and shown interest in hospitality as a career.
Individuals have either prior work experience or successfully completed courses in hospitality.
Individuals, along with their instructor, will visit a hotel, venue, or attraction at a predetermined time. A senior member of the hotel team will welcome the group to the hotel and a tour will be conducted by a member of the that hotel’s management team. During the tour, the students will have the opportunity to see hotel activity in the front of the house areas such as Front Office, other Rooms Division departments, Sales & Marketing, Finance, and Food & Beverage (restaurants, bars, and function space). They may visit back of the house operations based on business levels. These areas include Event Services, Food & Beverage including Culinary, Human Resources, and Housekeeping,
Time allocated to tour a property will be one to two hours.
Coordination of program will be the responsibility of the instructor and a representative of the hotel, venue, or attraction’s Human Resource Department. Most schools require advance lead time for coordination and approval process.
2. Shadow Program
This program is available to a class that has completed a minimum of two years of upper secondary or post-secondary education institution. It is also available to individuals who either have prior work experience in the hospitality industry or have completed courses in hospitality. The ideal students have expressed and shown interest in hospitality as a career.
Individuals, along with their instructor, will visit a hotel, venue, or attraction for a specified time during a given semester. They will have the opportunity to shadow a hotel professional to watch and learn the skills that hotel employee must possess to complete daily tasks. Tasks will vary based upon the job of the hotel employee.
Areas available to shadow in a hotel include but are not limited to Front Office, other Room Division Departments, Sales & Marketing, Housekeeping, Engineering, Food & Beverage including Culinary, Event Services, Front Office, and Finance.
Time allocated to Shadow will be at least one day a week during a pre-determined schedule with the establishment lasting a minimum of two hours.
Coordination of program will be the responsibility of the instructor and a representative of the hotel, venue, or attraction Human Resource Department.
3. On The Job Training/Co-op
This program is available to an individual or class that has completed a minimum of two years of hospitality education and ideally is in their third or fourth year of school. Individuals will have either prior work experience or has successfully completed courses in hospitality.
A Co-op is an opportunity for students to gain work experience in lieu of attending traditional school every other week and start earning a paycheck.
The instructor will coordinate and work with a representative of Human Resources at the hotel, venue, or attraction to schedule the training. A Co-op program will meet the standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth, the hotel, venue, or attraction agrees to policies set forth by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts including hours students will work and compensation.
The student will receive a training schedule from the hotel, venue or attraction and adhere to that during the time at the establishment. The individual will receive an overview of the tasks necessary to complete the job during their time.
Transportation to and from the hotel, venue or attraction is the responsibility of the student. The hotel, venue or attraction will advise the student of the appropriate attire.
